Although bacteria play a role in all forms of gingivitis, the primary cause of chronic gingivitis is inadequate oral hygiene. Use of alcohol and tobacco are thought to be a risk factor along with poor sanitation and diet. Gingivitis is a condition caused by a bacterial plaque which results in inflammation of the marginal gum tissue. Daily and adequate plaque control can reverse gingivitis. The general sign and symptoms are gum bleeding while brushing of teeth, red swollen and tender gums, and detachment of gums from the teeth, loose teeth, chronic bad breath or bad taste.
