Climacteric changes or symptoms usually begin approximatey six years before the natural menopause. Fluctuations in the levels of hormones produced by the ageing ovaries lead to physiological short-term changes. As the ovaries become less functional so they produce less oestrogen which affect large portion of the body , hormonal changes are felt in a number of ways. The most common symptom in the beginning which remains for several year is hot flushes, loss of vaginal lubrication. Urinary tract tissues also become less elastic and lead to involuntary urine leakage. The menstrual cycle can be longer, shorter or irregular and spotting may occur. Anxiety, irritability, lack of concentration, depression, mood changes are also important symptoms. There may be a fluctuation (increase or decrease) in the sexual desire, symptoms of short term memory. Insomnia, high sweats and tiredness. Ability to conceive is decreased. Muscular mass decreases, body fat increases and skin becomes thinner and le
