Cholecystitis can be classified into two groups i.e. acute and chronic. In 90-95% cases acute cholecystitis is caused by obstruction of the cystic duct by an impacted gall stone. But it has also been noticed that acute cholecystitis can be caused without the presence of gall stone obstruction. An attack of acute cholecystitis starts with crampy pain in the upper mid or right abdomen. Occasionally this pain will radiate to the back near right shoulder blade. The pain typically begins after having the meal but may be more pronounced when the heavy fatty meal is taken and it is not digested properly. The symptoms include right sided tenderness, nausea, vomiting, elevated temperature and constipation. If the cholecystitis is not properly treated the complications include perforation and gangrene of the gall bladder and emphysema, jaundice and hepatomegaly.
