Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)

Most women will normally experience discomfort during the first 2 or 3 days of their period.  The discomfort will vary from person to person; it can be a dull ache in the lower back or abdomen, or cramping pains which can become severe enough to cause nausea and vomiting.  When there is stress and anxiety, the pain can become worse.

There are two types of menstrual cramps – primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea. 

Primary dysmenorrhea is usually experienced 6 months to a year following the start of menstruation, and there is no underlying cause contributing to the pain.  In general, women who have painful periods can expect some relief, often disappearing completely after childbirth.

Secondary dsymenorrhea usually has an underlying cause.  This condition typically develops much later on, after menstruation has begun.  If periods suddenly become painful after several years of relative freedom from pain, it is likely due to an underlying abnormal condition such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease or adenomyosis.  Use of an intrauterine (IUD) device and coming off the birth control pill can also cause menstrual cramping.
