Symptoms & Treatments

Acne, a common skin problem often beginning in adolescence, is when your face, chest or back is covered in small, pus-filled sacs or pimples, blackheads or sore red bumps.  Washing your face with a mild soap on a regular basis may be helpful.  Sometimes over-the-counter acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide are recommended by your doctor; or prescription medicines such as an antibiotic.

An allergic reaction typically appears as irregular, raised or flat red sores, and is usually triggered by foods, drugs, insect stings, latex, cold air, sunscreens etc.  Hives (aka urticaria) are another skin reaction typical to an allergic reaction, which is when an eruption of red welts or bumps, often with severe itching form suddenly on your face or body.  Use of an antihistamine and a cool compress for the itching is recommended.  If the hives or rash does not go away on its own or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as swelling around the lips or trouble breathing, go to emergency or your doctor immediately as these are signs of a more severe reaction.

Psoriasis is a chronic disorder of the skin which can be mild or severe.  Psoriasis has many different appearances but is typically seen as reddish, scaly patches of inflammation, most commonly affecting the elbows, knees, scalp, and/or groin.  It may be small flattened bumps, large thick plaques of raised skin, red patches, and pink mildly dry skin to big flakes of dry skin that flake off.  Treatment depends on the severity and location and ranges from local (cortisone cream application, emollients, coal tar, anthralin preparations, and sun exposure) to systemic (internal medications, including methotrexate and cyclosporine).
