Symptoms

A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat.  A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow and is very common, especially in children.  The soreness is typically worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses.  A sore throat is usually associated with the common cold or flu virus.  While most sore throats heal without complications, in some cases, they develop into a serious illness.

Uncomplicated sore throats usually last up to 3 days, and a severe sore throat that lasts more than 3 days could be a symptom of a more serious condition like tonsillitis or laryngitis.

When the pain is located in the area around the tonsils it is also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis. The pharynx is the part of the throat that lies between the mouth and the larynx or voice box.

Pharyngitis is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes which line the pharynx, and is referred to as a very sore throat. Infection of the tonsils, tonsillitis may occur simultaneously .

Laryngitis is an inflammation of your voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation or infection.  With laryngitis you may experience hoarseness, weak voice or voice loss, tickling sensation and rawness of your throat, sore throat, dry throat or dry cough.

 Bacterial infections such as with strep (streptococci) or laryngitis, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics.  Other ways to relieve a sore throat include:

• Take acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen to relieve pain.
• Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup [8 ounces] of water).
• Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
• Suck on flavored freezies or popsicles.
• Use a humidifier in the room where you spend the most time in.
• Drink plenty of liquids to help keep your throat lubricated and prevent dehydration.
